In it for the FAME -Why are we so obsessed with celebrities?
News Flash! J.Lo in a bikini! Cheryl Cole gets axed from US X factor! Britney spears wearing sweat pants getting coffee! They're off again, no they're on again! Every time one of these stories flashes across a screen or is put on the front covers of magazine- we seem to go running to find out or see what it's all about. And for me, more often than not, it's a pretty obscure fact brought about by the need for something to talk about that really doesn't matter or have anything to do with what's really going on in the world. Personally, I don't care if J.Lo wears a bikini, or if she has cellulite- guess what- I'm sure I do too and I'm sure it's visible when I wear one also. It won't necessarily make or break my day if a star doesn't get another gazillion dollar deal for sitting there and looking pretty. (No offense to those who are deeply affected.) Why is it though, that we all almost can't help ourselves to soak in as much of this fluff as we possibly can? What is the attraction?
Now, it's not that I'm going to sit here and play angel when it comes to noticing certain headlines. Sure if I saw something interesting about Lady Gaga- I'd certainly give it a read. But I do not check out every tidbit that's put out there. I'm just too busy. And I'd like to know a lot more about what's going on in my life than I do about theirs. Because frankly- there's so much going on, there's enough for me to try to keep on top of as it is. But with tabloids and gossip sites booming, it's almost as if we are with them every step of the way. The constant buzz rotating about them and into our ears and eyes makes us feel as if we really know these people. (when sorry to say- they don't even know most of us exist)
Many will say it's what people want- but is it only because we are force fed the idea that they are what we want to be? I mean after all, they always look so damn shiny! And their hair is always styled to perfection, and the clothes- my god the clothes. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't like a stab at having the abundance of wardrobe pieces many stars are graced with. But is it more than that? Is it just that we always see them on TV or hear about them on the radio that breeds this obsession? Or does the reason also lie a bit deeper than that?
Are we so consumed by the need to know about celebrities because they are living what we have been groomed to want and have somehow come to believe we are deserving of and can obtain for ourselves? With the rise of social networking sites, is it so far fetched to think that obsession with celebrities and the constant use of these sites comes from a desire to be just that- famous, known, noticed. Are we so disinterested with our own realities that we strive for something else, something more? ; and will manically follow the 'latest scoop'' so that we can somehow be a part of it all? (even if this means losing our own personal time to deal with our own existence and situations). Could this be a reason for the rise in reality television?: stardom for having limited talent but an insatiable need for attention and thinking your famous in your own mind.
Is normal life really that boring? Are we all living through a haze of day dreams and tabloids?- a quest for notoriety?
We all know we've been guilty of being sucked in by a tidbit of gossip here and there- why though? What do you think? What causes you to delve deeper?
